GOOD TO GREAT BY: JIM COLLINS
Good to Great By: Jim Collins– What’s the difference between Good and Great?
A study was carried out and a deep analysis was completed on companies that showed a pattern in success – what distinguished them from the comparison companies (companies in the same industry with the same opportunities). Here is what was learned:
1. The good-to-great companies did not focus principally on what to do to become great; they focused equally on what not to do and what to stop doing.
2. The good-to-great companies paid scant attention to managing change, motivating people, or creating alignment. Under the right conditions, the problems of commitment, alignment, motivation and change largely melt away.
3. Greatness, it turns out, is largely a matter of conscious choice. Some companies were not in great industries, greatness is not a function of circumstance.
4. Ten out of eleven of the good-to-great CEO’s came from inside the company, whereas the comparison companies tried outside CEOs six times more often.
